Evidence supporting the use of: Vasicinol
For the health condition: Cough (damp)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3
Vasicinol is an alkaloid compound found in the plant Adhatoda vasica (also known as Malabar nut or Vasaka), which has been used in traditional Ayurvedic and Unani medicine primarily for treating respiratory ailments, including coughs with excessive phlegm (often described as "damp cough" in traditional systems). The use of Vasicinol and related alkaloids (notably vasicine and vasicinone) is rooted in the historical use of the whole Adhatoda vasica plant for its expectorant and bronchodilatory effects. According to traditional texts, these preparations are believed to help clear mucus from the airways and ease breathing.
Scientific studies on Vasicinol specifically are limited, though there is more research on vasicine, a closely related compound. Some pharmacological studies on extracts from Adhatoda vasica have shown expectorant, bronchodilator, and anti-inflammatory properties in animal models, which may help explain its traditional use for cough with phlegm. However, direct clinical evidence for Vasicinol itself is sparse, and most evidence remains preclinical or based on traditional use and anecdotal reports. Thus, while the use of Vasicinol for treating "damp" or productive coughs is justified by tradition and supported by some pharmacological rationale from related compounds and plant extracts, robust clinical validation is lacking.
