Vasicinone is an alkaloid derived from the plant Adhatoda vasica (also known as Malabar nut or Vasaka), which has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic and Unani medicine for the treatment of respiratory conditions, including cough, asthma, and bronchitis. The use of Vasicinone for "damp cough" (wet or productive cough) is primarily justified by this traditional usage. The leaves of Adhatoda vasica contain both vasicine and vasicinone, both of which have been attributed with bronchodilatory and expectorant properties in traditional medicine systems. Scientific studies have explored the pharmacological activities of vasicinone and related alkaloids, indicating some bronchodilatory and expectorant effects in animal models and in vitro studies. However, the evidence in humans remains limited, with only a few studies directly evaluating its efficacy and safety in clinical settings. Most modern formulations for cough rely on whole plant extracts rather than isolated vasicinone. Thus, while traditional use is well-documented, scientific validation is moderate and not robust. Overall, the historical and ethnobotanical evidence supports its traditional use for cough, but high-quality clinical trials are lacking.
