Aconite (commonly derived from Aconitum napellus, also known as monkshood or wolfsbane) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and homeopathy. In TCM, aconite preparations are used to treat various respiratory conditions, including coughs—especially those described as "dry" or associated with coldness and internal chills. The herb is believed to have warming and pain-relieving properties, and in some formulations, it is combined with other herbs to help alleviate symptoms of dry cough and support respiratory health. In homeopathy, highly diluted aconite preparations are also used for sudden-onset dry coughs, especially those triggered by exposure to cold wind or fright.

However, there is a lack of substantial scientific evidence from controlled clinical studies to support the efficacy of aconite for dry cough. Most modern medical literature highlights the potential toxicity of aconite due to the presence of potent alkaloids (e.g., aconitine), which can cause severe cardiac and neurological effects if not properly processed. Therefore, while its use for dry cough is well-established in traditional medical systems, its safety and effectiveness have not been validated in rigorous scientific research, and its use is discouraged outside of carefully regulated traditional or homeopathic contexts.
