Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Allium tuberosum Rottl., commonly known as Chinese chive or garlic chive, has a longstanding history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In TCM, the seeds and leaves of Allium tuberosum are sometimes used to address respiratory symptoms, including dry cough, due to their reputed warming and expectorant properties. The plant is thought to "warm the lungs," "dispel cold," and assist in moving Qi, which, according to TCM theory, can help alleviate coughs caused by internal cold or lung deficiency. However, the scientific evidence supporting its efficacy for dry cough is scant. Modern pharmacological studies have primarily focused on its antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties, but there is little direct research confirming its benefits for cough, especially dry cough. Most references to its use for cough are rooted in traditional herbal texts and folk practice rather than in controlled clinical trials or rigorous scientific investigation. Therefore, while its use is justified by tradition, the strength of evidence supporting Allium tuberosum for treating dry cough is modest and primarily historical rather than scientific.
