Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Bassia scoparia (commonly known as Kochia or burning bush) has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in East Asia. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the seeds of Bassia scoparia, known as "Di Fu Zi," are primarily used for their purported diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and antipruritic (anti-itch) properties. Some traditional herbal texts mention its use in formulas intended to "clear heat" and alleviate symptoms related to dryness, which occasionally includes dry cough. However, this use is not widespread or well-documented in the mainstream materia medica, and it is not a primary herb for respiratory complaints.

Scientific validation for the use of Bassia scoparia in treating dry cough is lacking. Modern pharmacological studies have focused on its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties, but there is little direct research examining its effects on cough or respiratory tract conditions. Thus, while there is some minor traditional precedent for its use in treating dry cough, the evidence base remains limited and is not supported by robust clinical or experimental data. As such, any use for dry cough is grounded in traditional rather than scientific rationale, and the overall strength of evidence for this indication is weak.
