Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Perilla frutescens (commonly referred to as perilla) is a plant widely used in traditional East Asian medicine, including Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Korean, and Japanese herbal practices. The leaves and seeds of perilla are believed to have anti-inflammatory, antitussive (cough-suppressing), and expectorant properties. In TCM, perilla is often included in herbal formulas such as "Xing Su San" and "Zi Su Ye," which are prescribed for symptoms associated with respiratory conditions, including dry cough, coughs related to wind-cold invasion, and mild bronchial irritation. The traditional rationale is that perilla helps to regulate qi, disperse cold, and moisten the lungs, thereby relieving cough.

Scientific validation for these effects remains limited. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest anti-inflammatory, bronchodilatory, and immunomodulatory effects of perilla extracts, which could theoretically benefit respiratory symptoms. However, clinical trials in humans specifically evaluating perilla or proprietary blends like "benegut perilla" for dry cough are lacking. Thus, while traditional usage is robust and forms the primary justification for its use, scientific evidence is preliminary and does not yet provide strong support. The overall evidence rating is therefore moderate for traditional support but low for rigorous scientific validation.
