Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bergenia species, particularly Bergenia ciliata and Bergenia ligulata, have a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and folk medicine in the Himalayan region. They are commonly used for a variety of ailments, including respiratory issues like cough (including dry cough), sore throat, and other throat irritations. The traditional rationale is largely based on the plant's demulcent and anti-inflammatory properties, which are believed to soothe mucous membranes and reduce irritation in the throat. Phytochemical studies of Bergenia species have identified compounds such as bergenin, catechin, and gallic acid, which may have relevant pharmacological actions, including mild anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects. However, direct clinical or robust preclinical evidence supporting Bergenia's efficacy specifically for dry cough is lacking. Most available support comes from ethnobotanical surveys and traditional texts, rather than modern scientific trials. Thus, while the use of Bergenia for dry cough is well-established in traditional practice, scientific validation remains limited and indirect at best.
