Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Cactus, particularly species such as Nopal (Opuntia spp.) and Prickly Pear, has a history of use in traditional medicine systems for a variety of respiratory concerns, including dry cough. In traditional Mexican and some Native American remedies, cactus mucilage is believed to help soothe irritated throat tissues due to its demulcent (soothing) properties. The inner gel-like substance has been used in homemade syrups and teas to alleviate coughs and throat irritation. There is, however, a lack of robust scientific studies specifically investigating cactus for the treatment of dry cough. The evidence supporting its use is thus largely anecdotal and based on ethnobotanical reports rather than controlled clinical trials. While the mucilaginous content may provide some mechanical soothing of the throat, there is insufficient scientific validation to recommend cactus as an effective treatment for dry cough. Most modern clinical guidelines do not mention cactus for this purpose. Therefore, its use is justified primarily by tradition, with limited supporting evidence.
