Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Chinese peony (Paeonia lactiflora) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), where it is known as "Bai Shao." In TCM, it is primarily used to nourish the blood, calm the liver, and alleviate pain, rather than being a principal herb for cough—especially dry cough. However, Chinese peony is sometimes included in multi-herb formulas designed to address respiratory complaints, often as a supportive or harmonizing component rather than the main active ingredient targeting cough. There is limited historical documentation specifically attributing anti-tussive (cough-suppressing) effects to this herb, and it is not among the classic TCM herbs directly indicated for dry cough (such as fritillaria or apricot seed).

Scientific validation for the use of Chinese peony in treating dry cough is minimal. While some studies have explored anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties of Paeonia lactiflora root, these effects have not been directly linked to clinical efficacy in alleviating dry cough in humans. Modern research largely focuses on its roles in autoimmune diseases, pain, and gynecological conditions. As such, its use for dry cough is supported primarily by traditional practices, with very limited direct evidence, and it is rarely used as a stand-alone or primary remedy for this symptom.
