Various species of Cistus, such as Cistus incanus and Cistus creticus, have been used in folk remedies to help soothe coughs, including dry coughs. The traditional rationale often cites the plant's aromatic resins and polyphenolic compounds, which are believed to have mild astringent, anti-inflammatory, and soothing effects on the mucous membranes of the throat. These properties may help reduce irritation that can lead to a dry cough. However, while these uses are well-documented in ethnobotanical literature and some herbal compendia, there is a lack of robust clinical data directly supporting its efficacy for dry cough in modern medicine.
