Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Cowslip (Primula veris) has a long history of traditional use in European herbal medicine, particularly for respiratory ailments such as dry coughs and bronchitis. The flowers and roots of cowslip contain saponins, which are believed to have expectorant properties, helping to loosen and expel mucus from the respiratory tract. Historical texts and pharmacopeias from the 19th and early 20th centuries often mention cowslip as an ingredient in remedies for cough and other pulmonary complaints. Although these uses are well documented in ethnobotanical literature, modern scientific research on its efficacy for treating dry cough is limited. A small number of pharmacological studies have investigated the expectorant and anti-inflammatory effects of cowslip extracts, but robust clinical trials are lacking. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) recognizes cowslip as a traditional herbal medicine for use as an expectorant in productive cough associated with colds, but not specifically for dry cough. Thus, while there is a strong traditional basis for its use, current scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness for dry cough is minimal. The evidence rating reflects the predominance of traditional use with some pharmacological rationale, but insufficient clinical validation.
