For the health condition: Cough (dry)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Finger Leaf Morning Glory (Ipomoea digitata) has a history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly Ayurveda, where it is known as "Vidari". In traditional Ayurvedic texts, it is mainly recognized for its rejuvenating, tonic, and nutritive properties, and is used for a variety of ailments, including as a general health tonic, aphrodisiac, and for promoting strength and vitality. Its use for cough, specifically dry cough, is less prominent but still present in some herbal compendia and local practices. The rationale for its use in cough is generally linked to its demulcent and soothing qualities, which are believed to help reduce throat irritation.
However, there is a lack of robust scientific studies evaluating its effectiveness for dry cough. The majority of references to Ipomoea digitata for cough relief are found in traditional or ethnobotanical sources rather than peer-reviewed clinical research. Some phytochemical analyses have indicated the presence of mucilaginous compounds, which could theoretically soothe the throat, but direct evidence for efficacy in cough is limited. As such, the support for its use in treating dry cough is primarily traditional, with limited empirical backing.
