Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Guava (Psidium guajava) leaves and fruit have been used traditionally in various cultures, particularly in Asia and Latin America, for treating coughs, including dry cough. The traditional use is primarily based on folk medicine, where guava leaf tea or decoctions are consumed to soothe the throat and reduce coughing. Some ethnobotanical surveys and traditional medicine texts cite guava leaves as an ingredient in herbal remedies for respiratory ailments, including coughs and colds. However, scientific validation for this use is limited. A few laboratory studies have demonstrated that guava leaf extracts have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, which could theoretically support respiratory health. There is also some evidence that guava leaves have antitussive (cough-suppressing) effects in animal models, but robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. Overall, while the traditional use of guava for dry cough is well-documented, there is only weak scientific support, and high-quality human studies are needed to confirm efficacy and safety for this specific application.
