Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Lingustilides are a class of phthalide compounds found predominantly in the roots of plants such as Angelica sinensis (Dong Quai) and Ligusticum chuanxiong, both of which are widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In TCM, these herbs are often included in formulations designed to address various respiratory complaints, including dry cough, although their primary indications are for blood circulation and pain relief rather than direct antitussive effects. Historical texts suggest that preparations containing these herbs are thought to "moisten the lungs" and alleviate coughs associated with dryness, but the specific attribution to lingustilides themselves is based on their abundance in these herbal sources rather than direct evidence.
From a scientific perspective, there is minimal direct research evaluating lingustilides for the treatment of dry cough. Most scientific studies on lingustilides focus on their anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and vasodilatory properties. There may be some indirect rationale for their use in respiratory conditions due to their ability to modulate inflammation, but clinical or preclinical studies specifically demonstrating efficacy for dry cough are lacking. Therefore, the use of lingustilides for this purpose is primarily justified by traditional practice, with little direct scientific validation currently available.
