Evidence supporting the use of: Maidenhair Fern
For the health condition: Cough (dry)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Maidenhair Fern (Adiantum capillus-veneris) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, for alleviating dry cough and other respiratory ailments. Historical sources, such as traditional European herbal texts and the Unani and Ayurvedic systems, describe its use as an expectorant and demulcent, suggesting it can help soothe irritated mucous membranes and promote the loosening of phlegm. The herb was commonly prepared as a syrup or infusion for these purposes.
Scientific validation for its effectiveness remains limited. Some in vitro and animal studies have investigated the plant’s phytochemical content, revealing the presence of flavonoids, triterpenes, and mucilage, which could theoretically contribute to soothing effects on the respiratory tract. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and modern pharmacological evidence is insufficient to confirm its efficacy for dry cough. Therefore, while its use is well-documented in traditional medicine, current scientific support is weak, justifying a moderate evidence rating.
