Rating (out of 5): 3

Ophiopogon japonicus, known as Mai Men Dong in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has a long history of use for treating dry cough and related respiratory conditions. In TCM, it is valued for its ability to "nourish yin," "moisten the lungs," and alleviate symptoms such as dry cough, dry throat, and scanty sputum. Classic texts such as the Shennong Bencao Jing and modern TCM pharmacopeias regularly list Ophiopogon as a remedy for "lung yin deficiency," which often presents clinically as a dry, irritating cough. Several traditional formulas, including Mai Men Dong Tang, feature this herb as a key ingredient.

While some modern pharmacological studies have explored Ophiopogon’s anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, clinical trials specifically addressing its efficacy for dry cough in humans are limited and often lack rigorous design. Some studies in animal models and cell cultures suggest that extracts of Ophiopogon may have protective effects on lung tissue and may help regulate mucus production, but this evidence is preliminary. Therefore, its primary justification for use in dry cough remains traditional, supported by centuries of empirical use in East Asian medicine, rather than robust scientific validation.
