Paris polyphylla, also known as "Chonglou" in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has a long history of use in China and other East Asian countries. Its main traditional indications include clearing heat, detoxifying, reducing swelling, and alleviating pain. In TCM, it has occasionally been used in complex prescriptions to treat symptoms such as cough, especially when associated with heat or toxicity, but its primary uses are more focused on anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor effects.

There is very limited direct evidence, either traditional or modern scientific, supporting the use of Paris polyphylla specifically for dry cough. Most references in classical TCM literature relate to its use for coughs with phlegm, coughs due to lung heat, or as part of multi-herb formulas for respiratory symptoms, rather than for simple dry cough. There is minimal modern pharmacological research examining its direct effect on cough reflex or dry cough in particular. Therefore, while there is some traditional precedent for its use in respiratory conditions, its application for dry cough specifically is weakly supported and not a primary or well-documented use.
