Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Pimpinella, most commonly Pimpinella anisum (anise), has a long history of traditional use for treating respiratory ailments, including dry cough. In various traditional medicine systems, such as those in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, Pimpinella anisum seeds and extracts have been used as expectorants and demulcents, believed to soothe irritated mucous membranes and help suppress or alleviate dry, irritating coughs. The essential oil, containing anethole as a major component, is thought to contribute to these effects. However, scientific evidence to support the efficacy of Pimpinella for dry cough remains limited. Most available data are preclinical, such as in vitro or animal studies suggesting possible antispasmodic, antimicrobial, or anti-inflammatory properties. There are a few small clinical studies examining anise in combination with other herbs for respiratory symptoms, but high-quality randomized controlled trials on Pimpinella alone for dry cough are lacking. In summary, while the traditional use of Pimpinella for dry cough is well established and supported by folk medicine practices, direct scientific evidence is modest and largely indirect. The rating reflects the strong traditional background and limited but suggestive scientific rationale.
