Platycodon root (Platycodon grandiflorus), also known as Jie Geng in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has a long history of use for respiratory conditions, particularly for coughs, including dry cough. In TCM theory, Jie Geng is said to "open up the lungs" and "dispel phlegm," but it is also used to facilitate the movement of lung qi and relieve throat discomfort. Historical texts, such as the "Shennong Bencao Jing," list Platycodon root as a treatment for cough, sore throat, and chest congestion. The traditional use is therefore well established, especially in herbal formulas targeting coughs with little or no phlegm (dry cough).

There is some preliminary scientific research on Platycodon root indicating anti-inflammatory, expectorant, and soothing effects on the respiratory tract, which could theoretically benefit dry coughs. However, most modern research focuses on its effects on productive coughs and sore throat, with limited clinical trials specifically for dry cough. The main active components, platycodin saponins, may help reduce irritation and inflammation, but robust clinical evidence is lacking. Therefore, its use for dry cough is primarily justified by tradition, with moderate but not strong historical and preclinical evidence supporting its application.
