Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Prepared Aconite Tuber (commonly known as processed Fuzi, the root of Aconitum carmichaelii) is primarily used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and is well-documented in the classical materia medica for its warming and yang-tonifying properties. In TCM, dry cough is sometimes attributed to internal cold, yang deficiency, or impaired transformation of fluids, and Fuzi is included in certain herbal formulas to "warm the lungs" and "transform phlegm" in such cases. However, its use is more commonly associated with severe yang deficiency, cold extremities, or collapse syndromes rather than straightforward dry cough. There is little to no scientific evidence supporting the use of prepared Aconite Tuber for dry cough, and modern pharmacological studies focus on its analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and cardiotonic effects rather than antitussive properties. Furthermore, due to the highly toxic nature of raw Aconite, only processed forms are used, and even then, with caution and under professional supervision. Modern clinical guidelines do not recommend it for cough, and there is a lack of controlled clinical trials demonstrating efficacy for this condition. Thus, its use for dry cough is justified only on traditional grounds with minimal supporting evidence and significant safety concerns.
