Evidence supporting the use of: White Pear
For the health condition: Cough (dry)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
White pear (Pyrus spp.), particularly the Asian white pear, has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for centuries to help relieve dry coughs and soothe the throat. It is commonly incorporated into home remedies, often stewed with rock sugar, honey, or other herbs, and is believed to have cooling and moistening properties according to TCM theory. These qualities are thought to counteract dryness and heat in the lungs, a common TCM diagnosis linked to dry coughs. However, scientific studies specifically evaluating white pear’s efficacy for dry cough are limited. A few laboratory studies indicate that pears contain antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds, but direct clinical evidence for cough relief is lacking. Most of the support for its use remains anecdotal or based on historical practice, rather than robust clinical trials. Thus, while pears are widely used in East Asian cultures for this purpose, their effectiveness for treating dry cough is primarily supported by tradition rather than strong scientific validation.
