Evidence supporting the use of: Abrus
For the health condition: Cough (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Abrus, most commonly referring to Abrus precatorius (commonly known as jequirity or rosary pea), has a long-standing role in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and other South Asian medicinal practices, for treating cough and related respiratory ailments. Traditional texts and ethnobotanical surveys report the use of Abrus leaf, root, and sometimes seed extracts (excluding the highly toxic seeds themselves) as expectorants, demulcents, or remedies for cough, bronchitis, and sore throat. The leaves, in particular, are often prepared as decoctions or infusions, and are believed to soothe the respiratory tract and alleviate symptoms of cough.
Scientific evidence supporting the use of Abrus for cough is limited and largely preclinical. Some studies have reported that extracts of Abrus precatorius exhibit anti-inflammatory and antitussive (cough-suppressing) properties in animal models, likely due to the presence of flavonoids, triterpenoids, and glycyrrhizin-like compounds. However, these studies are preliminary, often do not specify which plant part or preparation was used, and there is a lack of robust clinical trials in humans. The potential for toxicity, especially due to the presence of abrin in seeds, also raises safety concerns.
In summary, the use of Abrus for cough is primarily justified by traditional knowledge, with limited scientific studies offering some support but not enough for strong validation. Caution is advised due to the plant’s known toxicity.
