Evidence supporting the use of: Ardisia
For the health condition: Cough (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Ardisia is a genus of plants commonly used in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Asia. Several species, such as Ardisia japonica and Ardisia crenata, have a documented history of use for respiratory conditions, including coughs, in Chinese and Japanese herbal medicine. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) texts mention Ardisia (often referred to as "zi jin niu") as having expectorant and anti-inflammatory properties, and the plant has been included in multi-herb formulations aimed at relieving cough and related symptoms.
Despite its traditional use, high-quality scientific studies specifically validating Ardisia’s efficacy for cough are limited. Some preclinical studies have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties in Ardisia extracts, which could theoretically contribute to cough relief, but these studies are not directly focused on clinical outcomes in humans with cough. Thus, while a tradition of use exists, especially in East Asian herbal medicine, robust clinical evidence is currently lacking.
In summary, Ardisia is used for cough primarily on the basis of traditional practices, particularly in TCM and Kampo medicine, but scientific substantiation of these uses is minimal. The evidence supporting its use for cough is therefore moderate at best and largely anecdotal or historical rather than scientifically validated.
