For the health condition: Cough (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Arisaema (commonly spelled as "Arisaema"), particularly species such as Arisaema erubescens and Arisaema consanguineum, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, especially in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda, for treating coughs and respiratory conditions. In TCM, the processed tuber (known as "Tian Nan Xing") is considered to have expectorant, antitussive, and phlegm-resolving properties. It is frequently included in compound formulations to address symptoms of cough, bronchitis, or other respiratory tract disorders. The traditional rationale is that Arisaema "dries dampness" and "transforms phlegm," which aligns with its use against productive coughs. However, scientific validation of these uses remains limited. Some modern pharmacological studies have investigated the bioactive components of Arisaema species, with findings of anti-inflammatory and possible antitussive effects in vitro and in animal models, but robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. Additionally, raw Arisaema tubers are toxic and must be carefully processed to reduce toxicity before medicinal use. While tradition strongly supports its use for cough, especially in East Asian medicine, the evidence base is primarily historical and preclinical. Thus, while there is a foundation for its use rooted in tradition, scientific confirmation is not yet sufficient to raise the evidence rating beyond moderate.
