Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Bassia scoparia, also known as Kochia or burning bush, has a history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in East Asia. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), its seeds (known as "Di Fu Zi") are primarily used for treating urinary tract disorders, itching, and other conditions related to damp-heat. There are some references in folk medicine to the use of Bassia scoparia for respiratory complaints, including coughs, but these are relatively sparse and not central to its traditional applications. Scientific research on Bassia scoparia has focused mainly on its anti-inflammatory, diuretic, and antioxidant properties, with little to no high-quality clinical or preclinical research specifically addressing its effects on cough or respiratory tract irritation. Therefore, while there is a minimal traditional precedent for its use in cough, there is no substantial scientific validation, and it is not considered a prominent or well-supported remedy for cough in either the scientific or traditional literature.
