Evidence supporting the use of: Clerodendrum indicum
For the health condition: Cough (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Clerodendrum indicum (sometimes spelled as Celrodendrum indicum) has a longstanding history in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and folk medicine across South and Southeast Asia. The plant, especially its roots and leaves, has been used traditionally for treating respiratory conditions, including coughs, asthma, and bronchitis. Ethnobotanical surveys and historical texts document its use as an expectorant and demulcent, intended to soothe irritated mucous membranes and help expel phlegm.
However, modern scientific research validating these traditional uses is limited. Some phytochemical studies have identified the presence of bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, saponins, and alkaloids in Clerodendrum indicum, which could theoretically contribute to anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects. A few in vitro and animal studies suggest mild anti-inflammatory or antitussive properties, but these are preliminary and do not provide robust clinical evidence for efficacy in humans. No well-controlled clinical trials have been published to directly support its use for cough in the general population.
In summary, while the use of Clerodendrum indicum for cough is supported by a clear tradition and some promising laboratory data, there is a lack of high-quality scientific studies to confirm its effectiveness and safety for this indication.
