Evidence supporting the use of: Inula racemosa
For the health condition: Cough (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3
Inula racemosa (commonly known as Pushkarmool) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Unani for the treatment of respiratory conditions, particularly cough. The roots of Inula racemosa are considered expectorant, bronchodilator, and anti-inflammatory, which makes them useful in managing various types of coughs, including those associated with bronchitis and asthma. Ayurvedic texts such as the Charaka Samhita mention the use of Pushkarmool for soothing cough and promoting respiratory health. In Unani medicine, it is included in formulations for chronic cough and chest congestion.
Scientific studies exploring the efficacy of Inula racemosa for cough are limited but suggest some promise. Some animal studies and in vitro research indicate that extracts from the plant possess antitussive (cough-suppressing), anti-inflammatory, and bronchodilatory activities. These effects are attributed to its bioactive compounds such as alantolactone and isoalantolactone. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and most evidence remains preclinical or anecdotal. Despite this, its traditional reputation and preliminary pharmacological findings justify its continued use for cough in herbal medicine, albeit with the need for more rigorous scientific validation.
