Evidence supporting the use of: Semecarpus anacardium
For the health condition: Cough (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Semecarpus anacardium, commonly known as the marking nut, has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic and Siddha medicine systems in India. In these traditions, the plant is considered to possess a variety of therapeutic properties, including expectorant and anti-inflammatory effects, and is sometimes used in preparations aimed at treating respiratory ailments such as coughs and bronchitis. The most common forms of usage involve decoctions or powders made from the nut, often in combination with other herbs. Despite this traditional background, there is minimal scientific research directly investigating the efficacy of Semecarpus anacardium for cough. Most available studies focus on its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory potential, but do not specifically address cough as an endpoint. The evidence for its use in cough is thus primarily based on ethnomedical reports and classical texts, rather than modern clinical trials or pharmacological studies. As such, while the traditional rationale exists, robust scientific validation is lacking, and the evidence supporting its use for cough is weak.
