Sweet Violet (Viola odorata) has a long history of traditional use for relieving coughs and respiratory discomfort. In various European and Asian traditional medicine systems, including Unani and Ayurveda, the flowers and leaves of Sweet Violet have been used as an expectorant and demulcent to help soothe irritated throats and alleviate cough. Historical herbal texts, such as those by Culpeper and Gerard, mention its role in treating coughs, colds, and bronchitis. The mucilage content in the plant is thought to provide a soothing effect on mucous membranes, which may account for its popularity in herbal cough syrups and teas.

Scientific validation for Sweet Violet’s efficacy in cough management is limited. Some laboratory studies have reported mild anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities in extracts of the plant, and one or two small clinical studies have suggested some benefit for cough relief, often in combination with other herbs. However, these studies are generally of low quality or have small sample sizes. As a result, its use for cough is primarily justified by traditional knowledge rather than robust scientific evidence.
