Evidence supporting the use of: Albizia
For the health condition: Cough (spastic)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Albizia, particularly Albizia lebbeck, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Unani for the management of respiratory conditions, including coughs—especially those characterized as spasmodic or with bronchial irritation. Traditional texts describe the bark, leaves, and flowers as possessing expectorant, anti-inflammatory, and antispasmodic properties. In Ayurveda, Albizia is sometimes included in formulations aimed at relieving symptoms of asthma, bronchitis, and persistent cough. The rationale for its use is largely based on empirical knowledge and centuries of observation, rather than rigorous scientific trials.
Modern scientific evidence supporting Albizia’s efficacy specifically for spastic cough is limited. Some studies have identified anti-inflammatory, antihistaminic, and bronchodilatory effects of Albizia extracts in vitro and in animal models, which could theoretically contribute to its traditional use for respiratory symptoms. However, there are no high-quality clinical trials confirming its effectiveness for cough in humans, and the existing preclinical research does not directly address spastic (i.e., convulsive or paroxysmal) cough. Thus, while traditional use is well documented, scientific validation remains weak, and the evidence is best rated as modest.
