Rating (out of 5): 1

Atractylodes is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb commonly used for its effects on the digestive system and for strengthening the spleen. Its use for treating cough, particularly spastic cough, is primarily based on traditional herbal formulations rather than modern scientific validation. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), cough can sometimes be attributed to "phlegm-dampness" or "spleen deficiency," for which Atractylodes (often Atractylodes macrocephala, Bai Zhu) is believed to be beneficial because of its ability to dry dampness and tonify the spleen. Some classic TCM formulas for coughs, such as those targeting chronic or phlegm-related coughs, may include Atractylodes as a supporting ingredient to address underlying imbalances rather than directly suppressing cough reflexes. However, there is little to no robust scientific evidence from modern pharmacological or clinical studies that directly supports Atractylodes as an effective treatment for cough, especially spastic or acute cough. Most available research focuses on its gastrointestinal effects, immune modulation, and possible anti-inflammatory actions, but not specifically on cough suppression. Therefore, its use for cough is justified mainly by traditional practice, and the evidence is limited to historical use and theory rather than direct scientific validation.
