In these traditions, perilla leaves and seeds are often used for respiratory conditions, including coughs (especially those characterized as spasmodic or associated with bronchospasm), asthma, and phlegm. The traditional rationale is based on perilla's reputed abilities to "dispel wind-cold," "alleviate cough," and "calm wheezing." In TCM, it is typically included in herbal formulas rather than used alone, and is thought to support lung function and modulate immune responses. Modern scientific evidence supporting perilla's efficacy for spastic cough is limited. Preclinical studies have demonstrated that perilla extracts contain rosmarinic acid, luteolin, and other flavonoids with anti-inflammatory, antiallergic, and bronchodilatory properties.
