Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Black salt, also known as "Kala Namak," is primarily used in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Unani. In these traditions, black salt is believed to possess various therapeutic properties, including its use as an expectorant for coughs—especially for relieving symptoms associated with spastic or productive coughs. The rationale is often based on its supposed ability to balance doshas, aid digestion, and thin mucus, thus providing symptomatic relief. However, there is a lack of robust scientific studies or clinical trials that validate these claims. Modern medical literature does not support the use of black salt as a treatment for cough, spastic or otherwise. The only evidence available is anecdotal or derived from centuries-old medicinal texts, not from systematic research. Therefore, while the use of black salt for cough is justified by tradition, its efficacy is unproven by current scientific standards, and the evidence supporting its use is weak.
