Evidence supporting the use of: Dendrobium fimbriatum
For the health condition: Cough (spastic)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Dendrobium fimbriatum is an orchid species widely used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and related Asian medical systems. Historically, Dendrobium species (collectively referred to as "Shihu" or "Shí Hú") have been used to "nourish Yin," clear heat, and treat conditions such as dryness of mouth and throat, fever, and certain respiratory issues. Some traditional sources attribute anti-tussive (cough-suppressing) effects to Dendrobium species, but these references are generally broad and not always species-specific. There is little direct historical or ethnobotanical evidence specifically linking Dendrobium fimbriatum to the treatment of spastic (i.e., convulsive or persistent) cough; most references to cough treatment refer generically to Dendrobium or to other species.
On the scientific front, published pharmacological studies on Dendrobium fimbriatum primarily focus on its antioxidant, immunomodulatory, and anti-inflammatory properties, with little direct evidence supporting its efficacy for cough relief in modern research. No clinical trials or animal studies have confirmed its benefit in relieving spastic cough. Thus, the use of Dendrobium fimbriatum for cough (especially spastic cough) is justified at best by historical/traditional usage, and even that support is limited and non-specific.
