Jatoba (Hymenaea courbaril) is a tree native to Central and South America, and its bark, leaves, and resin have been used in traditional medicine systems in these regions. The use of Jatoba for treating cough, including spastic or persistent coughs, is primarily rooted in traditional practice rather than robust scientific validation. In Brazilian folk medicine, preparations of Jatoba bark or resin are sometimes used as remedies for respiratory ailments, including coughs and bronchitis. Ethnobotanical surveys document such uses among local populations, who attribute expectorant and anti-inflammatory properties to the plant. However, scientific studies specifically evaluating Jatoba’s efficacy for spastic cough are limited. Some laboratory research suggests that extracts of Hymenaea courbaril have anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities, which could theoretically support its traditional use for respiratory conditions, but these findings have not been directly correlated with clinical outcomes in humans for cough. There are no high-quality clinical trials substantiating its use for this indication. Thus, while there is a traditional basis for using Jatoba in the management of cough, current scientific evidence is insufficient to conclusively support such use.
