Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Korean Pine (Pinus koraiensis) has a history of use in traditional East Asian medicine, particularly in Korea and China, for respiratory ailments, including coughs—especially those of a spastic or persistent nature. The seeds, needles, and resin have been used in various decoctions or extracts to soothe the throat and reduce irritation attributed to cough. Historical texts and herbal compendia, such as the Donguibogam (a classic Korean medical text), reference pine-based preparations for cough, noting their "warming," "moistening," and "phlegm-resolving" properties. However, while these traditional uses are well documented, there is a lack of robust clinical evidence or modern pharmacological studies specifically validating the efficacy of Korean Pine for spastic cough. Some laboratory studies have identified anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties in pine extracts, but these do not directly equate to proven antitussive (cough-suppressing) effects in humans. Thus, current support for this use relies largely on traditional practice, with limited scientific corroboration and no established dosage or formulation for cough treatment in contemporary medicine.
