Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Lung tissue has been used in various traditional medicine systems, particularly in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), to treat respiratory ailments such as cough, including spastic (dry, hacking) coughs. In TCM, the principle of "like cures like" (organotherapy) has led to the use of animal lungs (commonly pig or cow lung) to support human lung health. Such preparations are believed to nourish and tonify the lung organ, moisten dryness, and relieve cough. Ancient Chinese texts and materia medica, such as the Ben Cao Gang Mu (Compendium of Materia Medica), mention the use of animal lung in decoctions, stews, or powders, often combined with herbs, as a remedy for chronic cough, wheezing, and phlegm conditions. However, there is little to no robust clinical evidence from modern scientific studies to validate the efficacy of lung tissue for cough relief. Most support comes from historical use and anecdotal reports rather than controlled trials. Modern pharmacology has not established any specific bioactive components in lung tissue that directly alleviate cough. Thus, while the use of lung for spastic cough is well-rooted in traditional practice, contemporary scientific substantiation is lacking.
