Evidence supporting the use of: Oroxylum indicum
For the health condition: Cough (spastic)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3
Oroxylum indicum, commonly known as Indian trumpet tree or "Shyonaka" in Ayurveda, has a long-standing traditional use in the management of respiratory conditions, including spastic cough. Classical Ayurvedic texts such as the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita mention Oroxylum indicum as a component in polyherbal formulations (e.g., Dashamoola) prescribed for cough, bronchitis, and other respiratory disorders. The bark, roots, and seeds are typically used in decoctions or powders to help alleviate cough and throat irritation.
Modern scientific validation for its efficacy in treating spastic cough is limited but suggestive. Preclinical studies have demonstrated that extracts of Oroxylum indicum possess antitussive (cough-suppressing), anti-inflammatory, and bronchodilatory activities in animal models. For instance, studies using methanolic or aqueous extracts have shown significant reduction in cough frequency induced by irritants in rats and guinea pigs, likely due to the presence of flavonoids (such as baicalein and chrysin) and other phytoconstituents. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and most evidence is derived from traditional use and preclinical research.
In summary, the use of Oroxylum indicum for spastic cough is primarily justified by traditional use, supported by some encouraging preclinical data but not yet by large-scale human studies.
