Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Osmanthus (Osmanthus fragrans) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), where its flowers are used to prepare herbal teas and remedies. Traditionally, Osmanthus is believed to have properties that help soothe the throat, moisten the lungs, and relieve coughs, particularly those that are dry or spasmodic in nature. The traditional use is primarily based on TCM theories of balancing bodily functions and addressing patterns such as "phlegm-heat" or "dryness" affecting the lungs. There are traditional formulas and folk remedies that include Osmanthus alongside other herbs for cough relief.

However, direct scientific evidence supporting the use of Osmanthus specifically for spastic cough is limited. A few laboratory studies have suggested that extracts of Osmanthus may have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which could potentially contribute to a soothing effect on the respiratory tract. Nonetheless, clinical trials or robust pharmacological studies in humans addressing cough (spastic or otherwise) are lacking. The rating of 2 reflects the strong traditional background and plausible pharmacological potential, but the absence of rigorous modern clinical validation.
