Evidence supporting the use of: Platycodon root
For the health condition: Cough (spastic)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Platycodon root (Platycodon grandiflorus), also known as balloon flower root, has been traditionally used in East Asian medicine to treat respiratory conditions, including coughs. Modern pharmacological studies have provided some scientific validation for its use in treating spastic (i.e., dry, irritating) coughs. Platycodon root contains saponins, particularly platycodin D, which have demonstrated expectorant, anti-inflammatory, and antitussive (cough-suppressant) activities in animal studies and in vitro experiments. These compounds appear to promote the secretion of airway mucus, thereby soothing the irritated mucosa and helping to suppress cough reflexes. Several preclinical studies have shown that platycodon root extracts can reduce the frequency and severity of experimentally induced cough in animal models. Furthermore, some small-scale clinical studies in humans suggest potential benefits in relieving cough and sore throat, especially when used in combination with other herbs in traditional formulas.
However, high-quality randomized controlled trials in humans are still limited, and most evidence remains preclinical or from traditional use. The mechanism of action is not fully elucidated but may involve modulation of inflammatory mediators and enhancement of mucociliary clearance. Thus, while there is promising scientific support, particularly from animal and laboratory studies, further research is needed to firmly establish its efficacy and safety in treating spastic cough in humans.
