Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Pubescent Angelica (Angelica pubescens), known as "Du Huo" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is primarily used for conditions involving wind-dampness such as rheumatic pain, headaches, and lower back pain. Its use for cough—especially spastic or spasmodic cough—derives mainly from traditional herbal formulations rather than modern scientific studies. In TCM, certain formulas may include Du Huo to address coughs associated with cold and dampness obstructing the lungs, although it is not a primary herb for respiratory issues. Historical texts and materia medica such as the "Chinese Pharmacopoeia" and "Shennong Bencao Jing" mention its traditional applications, with some references to its use in complex formulas that aim to dispel wind and relieve cough by unblocking the channels. However, there is little robust clinical or pharmacological evidence from modern research that directly supports the efficacy of Pubescent Angelica in treating spastic cough. Most contemporary studies focus on its anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects for musculoskeletal conditions. Thus, its use for spastic cough is justified predominantly by traditional practice, and the evidence supporting this use is limited and indirect.
