Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Sabadilla (Schoenocaulon officinale) has a history of use in traditional medicine, particularly within homeopathy, for the treatment of coughs—especially those described as "spastic" or paroxysmal. In homeopathic practice, Sabadilla is often recommended for symptoms such as violent, spasmodic coughs accompanied by tickling sensations in the throat. The remedy is prepared in highly diluted forms, following the principles of homeopathy, which are not based on modern pharmacological science.

There is, however, a lack of robust scientific studies or clinical trials supporting the efficacy of Sabadilla for cough, spastic or otherwise. Its traditional use is mostly limited to homeopathic and some ethnobotanical contexts, with little to no validation in conventional or herbal medicine. Most references to its use for cough are found in homeopathic materia medica and older herbal compendiums, rather than peer-reviewed scientific literature. The active alkaloids present in Sabadilla are primarily known for their toxic effects, particularly as insecticides, and not for therapeutic application to cough.

Therefore, while Sabadilla does have a traditional history of use for spastic coughs in certain medical systems, the quality and quantity of evidence are very limited, and scientific validation is lacking.
