Vasicine is a quinazoline alkaloid derived from the plant Adhatoda vasica (also known as Malabar nut), which has been traditionally used in Ayurvedic and Unani medicine systems for the treatment of respiratory conditions, especially cough and asthma. The use of Vasicine for cough (including spastic cough) is not only rooted in tradition but also supported by scientific studies. Pharmacological research has shown that Vasicine exhibits bronchodilatory, expectorant, and antitussive (cough-suppressing) activities. In vitro and in vivo studies on animal models have demonstrated that Vasicine can relax bronchial smooth muscles, leading to improved airflow and reduction of bronchospasms. It also promotes the expulsion of mucus from the airways, which helps relieve productive coughs. Some studies have compared the efficacy of Vasicine and its derivatives with standard bronchodilators and antitussives, finding comparable or additive effects.

Despite these findings, the majority of evidence comes from preclinical studies, with limited controlled clinical trials in humans. However, its traditional use and the pharmacological basis for its effects give moderate scientific support for its use in spastic cough and other respiratory ailments. Therefore, Vasicine's use for treating cough, particularly of spastic or asthmatic origin, is justified by both tradition and scientific research, though higher-quality human clinical trials are still needed to establish definitive efficacy and safety profiles.
