Evidence supporting the use of: Vladimiria souliei
For the health condition: Cough (spastic)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Vladimiria souliei is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb, commonly known as "Mu Xiang" (though this name may also refer to other Vladimiria species, such as V. souliei and V. souliei var. souliana). In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Vladimiria species are primarily used for regulating Qi, alleviating pain, and treating digestive disorders such as abdominal bloating and poor appetite. However, there are some historical records and ethnobotanical reports suggesting that Vladimiria souliei has been used as an adjunct for cough, particularly spastic or persistent cough, often in combination with other herbs. This traditional use is based on the herb's reputed ability to "regulate Qi" and "dispel phlegm," which, in TCM theory, can alleviate cough and respiratory discomfort.
Despite these traditional applications, there is a lack of robust scientific evidence specifically validating the efficacy of Vladimiria souliei for cough or spastic cough. Most of the available studies focus on its gastrointestinal benefits or anti-inflammatory properties rather than direct antitussive effects. Therefore, the support for its use in cough is primarily traditional, with a moderate historical basis but little modern scientific corroboration.
