Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

White rice has been used in some traditional medicine systems, particularly in parts of Asia, as a component of bland diets for individuals experiencing cough, spastic cough, or other respiratory issues. The rationale is largely based on the idea that easily digested, non-irritating foods may prevent throat irritation and reduce coughing frequency, especially in sensitive individuals or children. In some folk remedies, rice water (the starchy water left after boiling rice) is administered to soothe the throat and provide gentle nourishment during illness. However, there is no robust clinical or pharmacological evidence that white rice, as a food or remedy, directly treats or alleviates spastic cough. The practice is more about avoiding foods that could worsen coughing (such as spicy or acidic foods) rather than active intervention. No bioactive compounds in white rice are known to have antitussive (cough-suppressing) effects. Therefore, while the use of white rice in this context is rooted in tradition and dietary management, it should not be considered an evidence-based treatment for spastic cough.
