Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Anserina, also known as Potentilla anserina or Silverweed, has a long history of use in traditional European herbal medicine, particularly for the alleviation of cramps and muscle spasms. Historical texts and folk remedies often cite the use of Anserina for menstrual cramps, gastrointestinal spasms, and general muscle cramps. The plant contains compounds such as flavonoids, tannins, and phenolic acids, which are believed to contribute to its antispasmodic effects. The Commission E, a German regulatory body on herbal medicines, approved the use of Potentilla anserina for mild diarrhea and menstrual cramps based on traditional evidence and pharmacological studies indicating spasmolytic activity in vitro and in animal models.

However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and the evidence remains mostly traditional, supported by some preclinical pharmacological investigations rather than strong scientific validation. The rating reflects that while there is a longstanding tradition and some laboratory evidence suggesting efficacy, there is a shortage of high-quality, controlled human studies to firmly establish its effectiveness for cramps and spasms.
