Bugbane (Cimicifuga spp., particularly Cimicifuga racemosa, also known as black cohosh) has a long history of traditional use, especially in North American indigenous and European herbal medicine, for addressing various conditions including cramps and muscle spasms. Traditionally, the root was used to treat menstrual cramps, muscle pain, and rheumatic complaints. Historical records and ethnobotanical surveys document its use as an antispasmodic and for relief of muscular discomfort associated with menstruation and menopause.
However, scientific studies on Bugbane’s efficacy specifically for cramps and spasms are limited. Most modern research focuses on its effects on menopausal symptoms and not directly on cramps or spasms. While some pharmacological studies indicate that Bugbane may have mild muscle relaxant and anti-inflammatory properties, rigorous clinical trials validating its use for cramps or spasms are lacking.
