Evidence supporting the use of: Chamomile (Matricaria recutita)
For the health condition: Cramps and Spasms
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Chamomile (Matricaria recutita) has been traditionally used to relieve cramps and spasms, particularly those associated with digestive discomfort and menstrual pain. Scientific research offers some support for these uses, though the evidence remains limited and is generally rated as low to moderate in quality.
The antispasmodic effects of chamomile are attributed mainly to its flavonoids, such as apigenin, and volatile oils like bisabolol and chamazulene. Laboratory studies have shown that extracts of chamomile can relax smooth muscle tissue in the gastrointestinal tract, likely by modulating calcium channels and inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis. A small number of clinical trials suggest chamomile may help reduce the severity and duration of infantile colic and gastrointestinal spasms. One randomized controlled trial found that a chamomile extract, in combination with other herbs, reduced colic symptoms in infants. However, the lack of studies focusing solely on chamomile makes it difficult to draw firm conclusions.
For menstrual cramps, evidence is weaker but includes some small studies and traditional use references. While animal studies and in vitro research demonstrate muscle-relaxing properties, large, well-designed human trials are lacking. Most clinical recommendations therefore rely on a combination of traditional use and preliminary scientific findings.
In summary, there is some scientific basis for the use of chamomile in treating cramps and spasms, especially for mild gastrointestinal discomfort, but the overall quality and quantity of evidence are limited.
