Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Magnesium carbonate is commonly used as a dietary magnesium supplement, and magnesium itself is frequently referenced in relation to muscle cramps and spasms. The rationale behind using magnesium for these conditions is rooted in its physiological role: magnesium is a cofactor in muscle contraction and relaxation processes. Deficiency in magnesium can lead to neuromuscular irritability, which may manifest as cramps or spasms. Some studies have suggested that magnesium supplementation can be modestly effective in people with a proven deficiency or in specific populations, such as pregnant women with leg cramps. However, the majority of high-quality randomized controlled trials in the general population (including athletes and the elderly) have not found strong evidence that magnesium supplementation consistently prevents or relieves muscle cramps or spasms in those who have normal magnesium levels. The form of magnesium (including magnesium carbonate) may influence bioavailability, but this has not been shown to make a significant difference in outcomes for cramp relief. Overall, while there is a plausible scientific basis and some supporting evidence for magnesium’s role in muscle health, the strength of the evidence for magnesium carbonate specifically treating or preventing cramps and spasms is weak to moderate, particularly outside of the context of magnesium deficiency.
