Evidence supporting the use of: Magnesium Malate
For the health condition: Cramps and Spasms
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Magnesium malate is sometimes used to support or treat muscle cramps and spasms based on the known role of magnesium in nerve and muscle function. Magnesium is an essential mineral involved in muscle contraction and relaxation. Deficiency in magnesium can lead to symptoms such as muscle cramps, spasms, and even tetany. Some clinical studies suggest that magnesium supplementation may help prevent or reduce the frequency of muscle cramps, particularly in individuals who are deficient in magnesium or in certain populations such as pregnant women or older adults. However, the evidence is mixed and not all trials have shown a significant benefit, especially in the general population without clear magnesium deficiency.
Magnesium malate is a specific form of magnesium bound to malic acid, which is thought to have good bioavailability. While the malate form is often marketed for muscle pain (especially in the context of fibromyalgia), there is limited direct evidence that magnesium malate is superior to other forms of magnesium for muscle cramps or spasms. Most of the available evidence relates to magnesium in general rather than magnesium malate specifically. Therefore, while magnesium supplementation is scientifically plausible for cramps and spasms, the degree of benefit and the superiority of the malate form is not well established in rigorous clinical studies.
